She was born December 10, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts. and died May 15, 1866 in Amherst as well. She died of kidney disease. Her role in life was to be a poet and she succeeded. None of her work was published until after her death, which is a tragedy of itself.
During her life, Emily went to school at Amherst Academy. However, her education was shortened due to her reigning illness and depression. She lived at home until her death; she never married. Her mother became sick and Emily needed to take care of her.
Considering her mother's illness and her lack of companionship, Emily lead a very secluded life but that influenced the tone of her writing. Other inspirations for her were Leonard Humphrey - principal at Amherst Academy, Benjamin Newton - a close family friend, and William Wordsworth - an English poet who helped launch the Romantic Age in English literature.
